The Ombudsman’s legal authority to investigate complaints and make recommendations, as appropriate, is set out in the Public Services Ombudsman Act (Northern Ireland) 2016 (the 2016 Act).

The Act provides the Ombudsman with significant powers to obtain information from public service providers and their employees.

Our investigations are conducted in private, though the Ombudsman has the power to publish her reports where she considers it is in the public interest. Before publishing reports we will take appropriate steps to protect the identity of the complainant.
