Care and treatment of a cancer patient by the Belfast Trust

We found the Belfast Trust’s failure to ensure a patient was fit for surgery, and to consider other forms of treatment for his cancer, may have led to his untimely death.

Report recommendations

We welcomed the actions taken by the Trust following this case, and its acknowledgement that there was significant learning to be taken from the events surrounding the patient’s care and treatment.

In addition to these measures we also asked it to consider the use in future of ultrasound for select cases of malignant ulcers, and for relevant staff to develop and maintain their skills in endoscopic lesion recognition and endoscopic management of early gastric cancers.
